Pinhole Surgical Technique ®

Receding gums and significant gum loss, also known as gingival recession is a common complaint from patients. Recession of the gums can lead to a condition past generations referred to as being “long in the tooth” due to the fact that the roots of one’s teeth become visible.  This condition is also responsible for aging one's smile and forcing many to smile - without showing their teeth.  

The innovative Pinhole Surgical Technique ®  performed by Dr. Mason Luedeker can reverse this recession without the need for traditional gum-grafting surgical procedures that involved multiple visits over time to:

  • Create a flap from the roof of the mouth using a scalpel,

  • Reposition the flaps to the exposed areas of roots (at the gumline) and 

  • Stitch them in place.

Dr. Luedeker is one of only a handful of doctors in the United States that offers this revolutionary procedure for dealing with an age-old problem. Pinhole has been tested over years and proven to be a reliable alternative to grafting procedures in most cases. In fact, Dr. Luedeker was taught the procedure by Dr. Chao, the inventor of the procedure.

How exactly does Pinhole Surgical Technique ® work? 

After a thorough exam, diagnosis is presented and the affected teeth are charted which allows Dr. Luedeker to:

  • Treat all the teeth of one arch (maxillary & mandibular) in ONE visit,

  • Perform procedure under local anesthesia in the office,

  • Typically recommend ONLY over-the-counter (OTC) medication,

  • Clean the teeth, place small entry (~0.1inches) rather than “cutting”,

  • Use specialized instruments to perform procedure and stabilize with collagen membrane to stabilize and maintain a new gum line,

  • Quick, virtually pain-free recovery,

  • Treat all the teeth at one visit, and

  • All without a second surgical site on the roof of the mouth.

Gum recession is the exposure of the tooth roots caused by the gum tissue retracting. Gum recession is most commonly caused by:

  • Genetics

  • Teeth that are out of alignment

  • Teeth grinding

  • Trauma to the teeth

  • Overly-aggressive brushing or flossing

  • Severe gum disease

 

Laser Dentistry 

Many patients are scared of all medical or dental procedures requiring a needle.  Others cannot tolerate the noise of a dental drill up close and personal.

Peach Family Dentistry’s Biolase Waterlase® laser technology offers a pain free and quiet treatment.  In most cases, patients do not require any anesthetic for fillings and other routine dental procedures.

Gummy Smile

  • Another innovative use for the Biolase Waterlase ® laser is gingival recontouring.  This relatively pain-free treatment more gently removes “extra” gum tissue.  A gummy smile does not affect dental health, however, many customers do not like to smile. Our team finds that only a small amount of a topical numbing gel (NO SHOTS) is required to perform the gingival recontouring to restore a patient’s smile!

 

Oral Cancer Screening 

Annually, in the United States alone:

  • 53,000 people will be newly diagnosed with oral cancer

  • 71% of those oral cancers are found in the late stages (III and IV)

  • Over 10,000 deaths occur due to late-stage diagnosis

  • Men are twice as likely as women to develop oral cancer

Oral cancer is known as one of the most destructive cancers because treatments, especially when it is caught in the late stages.  In some cases, it can lead to significant quality of life issues.  

Peach Family Dentistry is dedicated to prevent oral cancer by conducting routine screenings.  An annual screening is quick and painless! Our team recommends the OralID® light that detects cellular changes that may be  manifesting - even before the naked eye. Usually, when cellular changes can be seen, oral cancer is likely at a more advanced stage.

Risk factors of oral cancer:

  • Alcohol

  • Tobacco

  • 40 years of age or older

  • Genetics

  • Sexual activity that may have had exposure to HPV

Implants 

Implants are used to replace a decayed tooth is extracted and a replacement tooth is substituted to maintain the harmony of the surrounding teeth and to prevent continued bone loss.  The body can resorb the bone around the tooth due to no longer having stimulus from the decay, however, the porcelain crown on top of the implant (after 4 to 6 months of healing) will  keep offer years of more confident smiles - and prevent other medical and dental issues in the future. 

Dental implants versus other options?

  • Unlike dentures, partials or even bridges, implants prevent the bone from being resorbed.

  • Implants offer a solid natural-feeling tooth that does NOT need to be removed while eating and will NOT “move” while chewing.

Wearing a mouthguard – when playing any contact sport or working in dangerous environments - can help protect teeth from injury and resulting trauma.  

For athletes, mouth guards are an important piece of athletic equipment - young and old - when playing a sport that involves falls, body contact, or flying equipment. Snore-Relief Mouth Guards

Peach Family Dentistry can provide individualized oral appliances that can decrease, or eliminate, bothersome snoring.   

  • This type of mouthguard is shaped to conform to the upper dental arch which creates a ramp behind the lower anterior teeth.

  • The ramp prevents the jaw from receding during sleep.

  • The guard prevents the tongue from “seeking” an opening between the upper and lower arches portion which keeps the throat’s air passage more open.
